Cycle Group activity. You will work in groups of three. Each person will research one of the chemical cycles. Once you have finished the research, you will make a poster (hand-out on computer paper)that represents the cycle and describes the processes involved within.
HW: Each group will work on their three posters(8.5 x 11). I will give some time to work on tomorrow but they will be collected at the end of the hour.

Light intensity lab.
Goal is to analyze how the intensity of light varies with distance. You will use the optical bench setup to determine a mathematical model to relate how the intensity and distance relate.
HW: Finish the light intensity lab and answer the questions.
Tomorrow we will wrap-up all the big concepts, go over the math formulas and examples, and lastly get you prepared to take the last test in this class.

1. Why is a food web a better model to study than a food chain when considering the effects losing or gaining a species may have to an ecosystem? Discuss this with you table mate.
2. If a plant produces 2000 calories of energy, then it is eaten by a cow, which is subsequently eaten by a mountain lion, how much energy is passed on to the mountain lion? If he needs to maintain a 2000 calorie diet, what does that mean for the cows? How can we represent this concept in pictorial form?
3. Explain how different organisms obtain energy. Why is the understanding of this such an important thing for human survival?

Bellwork
1. What is Ecology?
Begin ecology unit. Discuss levels of organization, food chains and food webs.
When finished, you will work on the analogy assignment in groups of two.
Please pick up the food chain and food web activity. In this activity you will use the pictures to create a food chain and a food web.
You will need two picture sheets. First cut out all the pictures on just one of the picture sheets. Flip them all upside down. Pick six on the pictures and do you best to create a food chain from the six pictures. You may not be able to use all six. Glue the pictures onto a blank sheet of paper and draw in the arrows to represent the flow of energy.
For the food web, cut out all the pictures on the second sheet. Now arrange them in such a way that will allow you to create a food web that will incorporate all the pictures. Glue these onto a blank sheet of paper and then draw in all of the arrows to represent the flow of energy.
Answer the questions on the packet. You will hand in the questions and the glued pictures.
Secondly, there is a food chain and food web worksheet. Please pick this up when you are done and work on this as well.
Lastly, your vocabulary needs to be finished by tomorrow.
I will check and pick up the vocab., the analogy, and food chain/food web pictures and questions tomorrow.

3. Explain the different ways that solar energy is used and collected
Objectives:
1. Be able to list and explain the different types of fossil fuels used today.
2. Be able to list and explain the different types of renewable energy resources options available to people.
Today, we will look at our biodiesel. We will be comparing it to standard diesel in terms of energy output. To do this we will burn a small section of rope that has been soaked in the fuel and use the energy released in the bonds to heat water. The fuel with the greatest increase in water temperature can be correlated as the better fuel source.
Finish renewable resources.
HW: Your review will be handed out to work on after the lab. Please work on this and we will go over them tomorrow. We will also have a practice test tomorrow. The test will be on Thursday.

Remember that you presentation and final product is due this week Friday. This is a 30 point assignment, please realize that this is a fairly big assignment. Be sure to delegate responsibilities to your group members. Each group will pitch the product on Friday.
Lab: BioDiesel. Today we will make the actual biodiesel. The goal/objective is to give you a hands on experience of how this alternative fuel can be made. The second part of the lab will require you to test the biodiesel that you have made and compare it to standard.
I will work with half the class at a time to make the biodiesel. While 1/2 is making the diesel, the other half should work on the vocab terms from the packet yesterday.
When finished, work on your project and presentation.

2. List as many possible renewable resources that you can think of. When you are finished, compare your list with your partners.
Begin discussion of alternative fuel sources.
Please read chapter 9, sections 2 and 3. Do the questions on pages 263.
HW: Finish the book problems. Continue working on your projects, at this point you should know what fuel source you are using and what type of project you are working on. Secondly, make sure that you begin working on the presentation.
